How to Prepare for Your First
Recording Session

Walking into the studio for the first time can feel overwhelming. Here's what our engineers at Da Spot want every first-time artist to know before they step into the booth.

01

Know Your Lyrics Cold

The booth isn't where you finalize your lyrics — it's where you perform them. Every time you stop to check your phone or rewrite a line, you're paying studio time. Come memorized.

02

Bring Reference Tracks

Show your engineer what you're going for sonically. Pull up 2–3 songs that have the vibe, the vocal tone, or the mix style you want. This saves hours of back-and-forth.

03

Warm Up Your Voice First

Don't walk into the booth cold. Hum, do light vocal exercises, drink room-temperature water. Cold vocals take longer to sound right — and you'll notice it in playback.

04

Know Your Key and Tempo

If you're recording to a beat, know the BPM and key before you arrive. Your engineer can match your vocal processing and effects more efficiently when you come prepared.

05

Trust the Engineer

Our engineers at Da Spot have recorded hundreds of artists. When they suggest adjusting your mic technique, your gain, or your take — they're trying to make YOU sound better. Stay open.

06

Bring Fewer People

Energy matters in the studio. A room full of 10 people can be distracting and draining. Bring your inner circle only — people who are there to work, not just watch.

07

Book More Time Than You Think

First-time artists consistently underestimate how long recording takes. Budget for setup, warm-up takes, multiple passes, and playback. A 2-hour minimum is a starting point — not a deadline.

08

Stay Hydrated, Not Caffeinated

Coffee and alcohol dehydrate your vocal cords. Water — ideally room temperature — keeps your voice performing at its best throughout the session.
